Surveillance Telephone Scam

The Oak Creek Police Department has received several reports regarding a telephone scam in our area. Residents are receiving automated calls claiming they are associated with the Police Department, requesting that the individual allow the placement of surveillance equipment in their homes or vehicles, “free of charge”, to stop theft from vehicles or home burglaries from occurring.

Be advised that the Oak Creek Police Department would never call to solicit individuals. Residents should be wary of responding to calls of this nature.

To avoid becoming a victim to telemarketing fraud:

• Don’t be pressured into making any immediate decision while on the phone with an individual.
• Don’t give financial information such as your credit card, checking account, or Social Security numbers to unknown callers.
• If an organization claims to work with police, firefighters, or veterans, check with the organization by calling the number listed in the telephone book. Do not call back a number you do not recognize.
• Be cautious of statements that contain the word “free” or “special offer”. Don’t pay for services by cash, messenger or overnight mail.
• Check out unsolicited offers with the Better Business Bureau or your local consumer protection agency before you agree to send money.
• If in doubt, talk to family and friends, your attorney, accountant or banker before investing in any large purchases or investments.
• Call the National DO NOT CALL Registry (1-888-382-1222) to help eliminate unsolicited calls on your phone.
