The Following are Mayor Scaffidi's comments from the
Sikh Temple Vigil, August 7, 2012.
Welcome to Governor Scott Walker, Representative Paul Ryan, Senator Herb Kohl, and many other elected officials and dignitaries.
Traditionally, National Night Out has been an event promoting public safety, community pride, and stronger police and community relationships. The events of Sunday, August 5, have demonstrated how important those values are in a community like Oak Creek and across our country.
Tonight we mourn the victims of the Sikh Temple shooting and grieve with their families. We pray for the safety of our wounded officer Lt. Brian Murphy and we honor the heroic efforts of our police, fire, and other first responders.
As a community, we will not let this single tragic event define who we are. It will only serve to build a stronger resolve against senseless violence and hatred.
Our healing process begins tonight when we come together, joining hands to celebrate the diversity of our city, which enriches our lives. Join me in embracing that diversity.
Steve Scaffidi
Mayor
City of Oak Creek
