Around the Town with Mayor Dan: Summer is Around the Corner!

The school year is wrapping up, summer is around the corner, and Oak Creek will soon be buzzing with activities for the whole family to enjoy!  The splash pad opened last weekend, and Drexel Down Square patrons have been enjoying shopping and outdoor dining options now that the weather has gotten warmer. With the Summer Soulstice event coming up on June 17, and Dog Day at Drexel planned for July 15, the square will be a vibrant place for residents and visitors alike!

Recently, one of Drexel Town Square’s businesses — Gigi’s Cupcakes — celebrated their official grand opening with a visitor from the company’s founder, Gigi Butler.  Gigi began her cupcake empire in 2008 with one shop in Nashville . . . and now has nearly 100 Gigi’s Cupcakes locations in 23 states!  We’re happy that Oak Creek is home to one of these locations.  Customers who stopped in on May 20 got a chance to sample cupcakes, win prizes, and meet Gigi herself.

With all of the great dining options in our city, I am glad there are also plenty of opportunities for activity, as well!  On May 6, I had the honor of participating in the Meadowview and Shepard Hills Color-a-Thon Fun Run.  This fun community event raised money for new Shepard Hills playground equipment and improvements to Meadowview’s library furniture and media center.  On May 13, I took part in the Knights Against Substance Abuse 5K Awareness Walk, on the beautiful Oak Leaf Trail.  The $2400 raised at this event went to two area non-profit organizations who work daily to help individuals on their journey to recovery from substance abuse:  Meta House and SALS Recovery Center. It was encouraging to see so many community members come out for both of these worthwhile fundraisers!

In my first few months as mayor, I have enjoyed meeting so many Oak Creek residents while attending wonderful community events and participating in grand opening celebrations for our great new businesses.  I look forward to meeting YOU at one of this summer’s events!  To find out what’s happening, please visit www.oakcreekwi.org/communityevents!
